*** Penguins' Tibbetts goes before state parole board

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Penguins forward Billy Tibbetts
appeared before a state parole board hearing officer Thursday who
will determine whether Tibbetts violated his parole when he
punched an opponent during a game. If the hearing officer in
Pittsburgh believes Tibbetts violated his parole and
Massachusetts officials agree, they could petition a court to
revoke it. In that case, Tibbetts could be ordered to serve the
remainder of a 3-to-5-year sentence on a Massachusetts sexual
assault conviction in 1994. Tibbetts had no comment as he entered
the hearing with Penguins general manager Craig Patrick and
didn't speak to reporters afterward. Tibbetts also did not return
a message left at a hotel where he is staying. Tibbetts punched
Atlanta's Darcy Hordichuk as he stood in the bench area during a
Jan. 27 game.

*** Wings match Leafs at 270-270-92; tiebreaker on Saturday

(AP) - Although they no longer are in the same division or even
in the same conference, the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple
Leafs have a strong rivalry. Throughout Thursday's game in
Detroit, won by the Wings 2-1 on Darren McCarty's goal, fans of
both teams could be heard cheering loudly. "There's always been
an air of intensity when these two teams play," Toronto's Steve
Thomas said. "There's a rivalry that's developed over the years.
Both teams get up pretty well for the rivalry." The win tied the
series between the longtime rivals at 270-270-92. They meet again
Saturday night in Toronto. McCarty had a goal and an assist as
the Red Wings improved to 7-0-1 in their past eight home games.
Kirk Maltby had the Detroit fans cheering when he crashed the net
and scooped in a rebound at 6:27 of the first period. Toronto's
fans got in it when Shayne Corson one-timed a shot from the slot.

SLAP SHOTS

David Legwand might just lead Nashville to the first playoff
berth in franchise history. The second-year center scored two
power-play goals in the second as the Predators picked up their
fourth straight win, 3-1 over Columbus. Nashville, a third-year
franchise, moved within two points of eighth-place Edmonton in
the Western Conference. The Predators also reached .500
(24-24-7-2). Elsewhere, St. Louis' Pavol Demitra scored his first
goal in three games since returning from an eye injury and added
an assist in a 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay. The Blues moved one
point behind Colorado for first place overall in the league.
Vancouver's Bob Essensa made 31 saves and Steve Shields stopped
26 shots for San Jose as the teams played to a 0-0 tie, and Rob
Zamuner scored an unassisted goal with 11:46 remaining in
regulation, lifting Ottawa to a 4-4 tie with New Jersey.
