*** Packers' Sherman gets new contract

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman and
the team have agreed to terms on a new contract that will
compensate him as both coach and general manager. "We reached a
five-year agreement that is reflective of Mike's expanded duties
and responsibilities," team negotiator Andrew Brandt said Friday.
Sherman is scheduled to assume his role as coach, executive vice
president and general manager June 1, when GM Ron Wolf retires
and becomes a consultant. Brandt wouldn't divulge financial terms
and Sherman's agent, Bob LaMonte, was traveling Friday and didn't
immediately return phone messages. Last week, team president Bob
Harlan said an annual income of $2.5-to-$3 million wouldn't be
out of line for someone with Sherman's responsibilities. His
promotion to head of football operations made it necessary to
rework the remaining four years of his five-year contract he
signed in January 2000.

*** Rams' Warner reports no headaches

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Kurt Warner, who skipped the Pro Bowl because of
lingering effects from a concussion, met with coach Mike Martz on
Friday and said he's been headache-free "within the last week or
two." "He feels normal again," Martz said at a luncheon to introduce
new assistant coaches. "I would worry about Kurt if the doctors
weren't so insistent that he's fine." Martz also said there'd be
more concern if there was a game next week. But Warner, who was hurt
in the Rams' last regular-season game, will be able to avoid contact
at least until late July in training camp. "If you can give him six
full months off, he'll be like he was before the injury," Martz
said. "That's why we didn't want him to play in the Pro Bowl,
because he was still having some of these symptoms. But when you
test him, he's fine." Martz said it's feasible within the salary cap
to keep both Warner and Trent Green next year.

*** Vikings' Steussie criticizes Moss

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota Vikings tackle Todd Steussie says he
loves receiver Randy Moss' talent, but not his admitted
reluctance to play hard on every play if he's not going to get
the ball. "Absolutely, I have a problem with him on that,"
Steussie told the Star Tribune. "Randy has pretty much admitted
that he takes some plays off," Steussie noted in an interview
published Thursday. "And it's true that nothing negative may
happen on some of those plays." Steussie said Moss does a
disservice to the players who can't afford to take a play or two.
"I know Randy is his own man, and he's a great player, but he's
going to have to start figuring this stuff out," he said. In an
interview published in ESPN Magazine last month, Moss admitted he
doesn't always give 100 percent.

*** Mariucci interviews possible QB coaches, considers hirings

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Three candidates have interviewed for
the San Francisco 49ers' vacant quarterbacks coach job, coach
Steve Mariucci said Friday. The vacancy was created last month
when San Francisco offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was
hired as head coach of the Detroit Lions, and Mariucci promoted
quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp to offensive coordinator. Mariucci
interviewed former NFL quarterback Steve Bono; former Arizona
State offensive coordinator John Pettas; and Purdue quarterbacks
coach Greg Olson for the job. He expects to interview more
candidates in the next few days. "There's no rush, because I want
to choose the right guy," Mariucci said. "We're looking for
another (Knapp), and whatever it takes to find that, we'll do
it." In the West Coast offense run by the 49ers and several other
NFL teams, the QB coach is a critical part of the braintrust
which develops offensive game plans.

*** Lions hire Pires as linebackers coach

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Glenn Pires, who has coached linebackers
for the Arizona Cardinals since 1996, was hired as linebackers
coach of the Detroit Lions on Friday. Pires was reunited with
Vince Tobin, who hired him in 1996 with the Cardinals. Tobin was
named as the Lions' defensive coordinator last week after five
seasons as the Cardinals' coach. Pires had been Michigan State's
recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 1995
after six years as an assistant coach at Syracuse.

*** Bengals sign guard Anthony Byrd

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Bengals signed offensive guard
Anthony Byrd to a two-year contract Friday. Byrd was a four-year
starter at Louisville, but wasn't picked in the NFL draft last
year. The New York Jets signed him as a free agent, then waived
him Aug. 14.

*** O.J. Simpson surrenders, posts bond

MIAMI (AP) - Former NFL star O.J. Simpson surrendered to authorities
Friday on charges stemming from a December traffic altercation where
a motorist accused him of reaching into his car and pulling off his
glasses. Simpson walked into a Miami-Dade County jail at noon ET
Friday, then was taken to an unmarked police car and driven to the
back of the sprawling jail. He was booked and posted $9,000 bond,
his attorney Yale Galanter said. Simpson is charged with burglary of
a car, a felony, and battery, a misdemeanor. If convicted, he faces
up to 15 years in prison on the burglary charge and up to one year
in county jail on the battery charge. Motorist Jeffrey Pattinson,
55, said Simpson caused a small scratch on his face when he pulled
the glasses off during the dispute. A jury acquitted Simpson of the
June 1994 slayings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her
friend Ronald Goldman.
