*** Oklahoma to open title defense at North Carolina
(AP) - Oklahoma will open defense of its national championship
earlier than expected -- against North Carolina Aug. 25 in the
Hispanic Fund Football Classic, sources from both schools said
Friday. The Sooners, who finished 13-0 after beating Florida
State in the Orange Bowl for the national title, could end up
playing 14 games in 2001 -- 12 during the regular season, the Big
12 title game and then a bowl game. According to the sources, who
spoke on the condition of anonymity, the game is set and the
official announcement would come in the next few days. Adam
Chavarria, national director for the Hispanic College Fund, would
not confirm the matchup, saying he preferred to let the host
school make the announcement. No team has won a national title
playing a 14-game season.

*** Two Aggies assistants jump to NFL
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M assistant head coach
Larry Kirksey and offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe have
resigned to take positions in the NFL. Coach R.C. Slocum said
Friday that Kirksey, who spent one year with the Aggies, will
become wide receivers coach with the Detroit Lions, and
Kragthorpe will coach quarterbacks for the Buffalo Bills. Running
backs coach Pete Hoener left the Aggies staff after one season to
become tight ends coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Slocum noted
that he's lost five assistant coaches to the NFL over the past
two years. Assistants Bill Johnson and Ron Milus departed prior
to last season. "One of my main responsibilities is to make
certain our players have quality coaching," Slocum said. "From
the interest shown in these men, I think the level of respect for
A&M's coaching staff is apparent."
*** Memphis H.S. coach resigns amid recruiting investigation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Lynn Lang, the former high school football
coach accused of soliciting $200,000 to steer a player to
Alabama, has resigned from the Memphis school system. In a
statement released to The Commercial Appeal on Thursday, Lang
said he has sent a letter of resignation to Supt. Johnnie B.
Watson, ending his five-year stint at Trezevant. He was stripped
of his coaching job last week because of an unrelated
investigation. "The decision to resign was difficult and painful
for me, but it was the best thing for Trezevant and its athletic
program," Lang wrote. "I felt that regardless of what happens to
me, my presence would overshadow all of the positive
accomplishments of the football team as well as the academic
efforts of the school." Lang was suspended Jan. 10, the day
former assistant coach Milton Kirk went public with allegations
of soliciting money to influence Albert Means in his choice of
college.
