*** Sharks' Nolan suspended by NHL for 11 games
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The NHL followed up Owen Nolan's big hit
on Grant Marshall with a heavy blow of its own. Nolan, the
Sharks' captain and second-leading scorer, was suspended for 11
games on Friday for a hit earlier this month that sent Dallas
forward Marshall to a hospital with a concussion. The severity of
the suspension stunned and enraged the Pacific Division-leading
Sharks, who will be without Nolan and injured center Vincent
Damphousse -- two-thirds of San Jose's top line earlier in the
season -- for nearly three critical late-season weeks if Nolan's
suspension isn't shortened on appeal. "Owen is our best player,
and I don't think it's right how he has been turned into a
villain," Sharks GM Dean Lombardi said. "We all know it was a
very hard, very physical hit, and you can't justify what he did.
But to say this is revenge, I don't think so. The issue here is
appropriate punishment."

*** Uncanny Burke helps Coyotes can Oilers
(AP) - Sean Burke was uncanny in goal again. Given some of his
performances in a season when the Phoenix Coyotes are
consistently outshot, it wasn't a given that his teammates would
notice, but they did. "He's been exceptional all year," Keith
Tkachuk said after the Coyotes beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-0
Friday night. "He's playing unbelievable. He's making big saves.
He's saving us. You know, he's saved a lot of hockey games for
us." Burke had 38 saves for his first shutout in three months.
Tkachuk scored his 600th career point with a first-period goal,
and Jeremy Roenick added a goal with 8:51 left, giving the
beleaguered Burke a cushion and helping the Coyotes snap a
three-game losing streak at home. The Coyotes were winless in
their five previous games (0-3-1-1), but got the first win in
their series against the Oilers this season.
SLAP SHOTS
In other NHL action, Peter Bondra scored on a short-handed
breakaway and on a power play to take over the NHL goal-scoring
lead as Washington extended its unbeaten streak to a season-best
five games with a 4-3 victory over Anaheim. Mighty Ducks captain
Paul Kariya had a pair of second-period goals, the second for his
500th NHL point. Elsewhere, Manny Fernandez made 28 saves against
his former team and rookie Marian Gaborik scored the game-winning
goal as Minnesota beat Dallas for the second time this season,
2-1. Ray Ferraro and Per Svartvadet each scored two goals as
Atlanta beat Boston 5-1. Atlanta has beaten Boston in all three
meetings this season by the combined score of 18-8. Peter Nedved
scored two goals, to lead the New York Rangers to a 4-2 victory
over Florida. Mark Messier scored for the second consecutive game
after going 18 straight without a goal.
*** Panthers trade Mellanby to Blues for Morisset, draft pick
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - St. Louis acquired right wing Scott Mellanby
from Florida on Friday night for junior right wing David Morisset
and a conditional 2002 draft pick. Mellanby had been with the
Panthers since their inception in 1993. He was the Panthers'
captain the last four seasons. Mallanby, 34, has four goals and
nine assists in 40 games this season. The 16-year veteran holds
Florida records for goals (117), assists (133), points (250) and
games (552). The former University of Wisconsin star also has
played for Philadelphia and Edmonton. Morisset, 19, selected 65th
overall by the Blues in the 2000 draft, has 21 goals and 20
assists in 40 games this season for Seattle in the Western Hockey
League. The Panthers will get the Blues' fifth-round pick in 2002
unless Mellanby signs with another NHL team after this season. If
he signs with another team, Florida will get a compensatory pick
from that team if the choice is higher than the Blues' pick.
*** Thrashers get Kohn from Anaheim
ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Thrashers acquired forward Ladislav
Kohn from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for defenseman Sergei
Vyshedkevich and goaltender Scott Langkow on Friday. The
Thrashers also activated left wing Tomi Kallio and placed
defenseman Steve Staios on injured reserve retroactive to Feb. 2.
Kohn had four goals and three assists in 51 games for Anaheim
this season. Vyshedkevich split the past two seasons between
Atlanta and Orlando of the IHL. He had seven points in 30 games
with the Thrashers. Langkow did not play for the Thrashers this
season. He was with the Mobile Mystics of the ECHL.
*** Milbury to return as Islanders' GM
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Islanders co-owner Charles Wang announced
between periods of a television broadcast Friday night of New
York's game against Philadelphia that beleaguered general manager
Mike Milbury will return next season. "Absolutely, I can tell you
that Mike Milbury will be the general manager next year," Wang
said. "He's the guy we're building our team around as far as
giving him responsibility and authority." Wang, who shares
ownership with Sanjay Kumar, said stability is an important part
of what he's trying to instill in the franchise. The announcement
did little to motivate the Islanders as they fell to the Flyers,
5-2. "We've got to have that stability," Wang said. "We can't
keep changing and changing and changing."

*** Stars activate Matvichuk, demote Jackman
DALLAS (AP) - Defenseman Richard Matvichuk, whose jaw was broken
two weeks ago by a puck that ricocheted off his stick, was
activated from the injured list by the Dallas Stars in time for
Friday night's game against Minnesota. The Stars cleared a spot
for him by sending defenseman Richard Jackman to Utah of the
International Hockey League. Matvichuk, who missed only four
games thanks to the All-Star break, will wear protective headgear
similar to a football helmet. He wore a facemask but did not
score in the Stars' 2-1 loss to the Wild. In 49 games this
season, Matvichuk has two goals and nine assists. He leads the
team with 85 blocked shots. Jackman was recalled for the third
time this season on Tuesday and played Wednesday night against
Edmonton. He's scoreless with 18 penalty minutes in 16 games with
Dallas this season. In 29 games in Utah, he leads defenseman with
eight goals.
*** Knee injury sidelines Devils defenseman Niedermayer
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Devils All-Star
defenseman Scott Niedermayer was placed on the injured list
Friday with a knee injury and probably will miss the next three
games. Niedermayer, who was hurt on Thursday night in a 4-4 tie
with the Ottawa Senators, underwent an arthroscopic procedure on
his right knee Friday, Devils spokesman Mike Levine said. The
defenseman is expected to start skating on Monday and may be back
in the lineup later in the week. New Jersey recalled defenseman
Willie Mitchell from Albany of the AHL to replace Niedermayer.
Also, defenseman Brian Rafalski is day-to-day after hurting his
left shoulder in the same game. The Devils will be on the road at
Pittsburgh on Saturday and in New York on Sunday against the
Rangers.
*** Colorado's Deadmarsh leaves game as wife delivers twins
DENVER (AP) - Colorado Avalanche forward Adam Deadmarsh left
Friday night's 5-3 loss to the Calgary Flames to be with his wife
while she gave birth to twin girls six weeks premature.
Deadmarsh, who has missed 21 games because of various injuries,
scored in the first period but left midway through the second
when he learned that his wife Krista went into labor. She was due
March 22 and had also gone into labor on Dec. 29. "We got Deadie
out after a timeout," Colorado coach Bob Hartley said. "I guess
he got out of here in a world-record time." Team officials said
Krista Deadmarsh and the twins, Madeline and Alexis, were doing
well after the delivery. The twins are the couple's first
children. The wives of four other Avalanche players -- Joe Sakic,
Aaron Miller, Greg de Vries and Adam Foote -- also have had
children this season.
