*** Three Rivers to be demolished

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Three Rivers Stadium, home of the greatest play
and some of the greatest teams in NFL history, will be demolished
Sunday in a 19-second burst of flashing dynamite and crumbling
concrete. Thousands of onlookers will crowd atop Mount
Washington, the scenic peak that towers above the city's skyline,
and in riverfront Point State Park to watch the implosion of the
mammoth circular stadium, which turned 30 in July. A monument to
the days when sterile uniformity and multipurpose functionality
were the touchstone of stadium planning, Three Rivers will be
replaced by separate baseball and football stadiums currently
rising nearby on the city's North Shore. "It will be sad to see
it go," former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Chuck Tanner said.
"There were a lot of great moments in that stadium, and great
people. I'm sure Mr. Rooney (the late Steelers owner Art Rooney
Sr.) will be watching somewhere."

*** Padres' Gomez accepts demotion

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Gomez, the San Diego Padres' shortstop
during their World Series season of 1998, has accepted an
outright assignment to Triple-A Portland and an invitation to
spring training as a non-roster player. Gomez was waived to make
room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Bobby J. Jones, who
has agreed to a $625,000, one-year contract. The Padres are still
awaiting approval of the contract by the commissioner's office.
Gomez, who cleared waivers on Friday, has played in only 109
games the last two seasons due to knee problems that required
surgery in both seasons.

*** Indians sign Prieto to minor league contract

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians signed former Oakland
right-hander Ariel Prieto to a minor league contract Saturday.
Prieto, 31, split the 2000 season with Oakland and Triple-A
Sacramento after missing the 1999 season because an elbow injury.
Prieto was 1-2 with a 5.12 ERA in eight games for the A's,
starting six times and pitching 31 2/3 innings. He was 8-4 with a
3.27 ERA in 20 games for Sacramento. Overall, he is 15-24 with a
4.88 ERA in 67 career appearances. Oakland selected Prieto in the
first round of the 1995 draft after he defected from Cuba.

*** Baseball prepares to begin again

(AP) - Even the alligators will know when Alex Rodriguez starts
spring training.

Floating in the pond beyond the left-field wall at Charlotte
County Stadium, the green monsters are sure to be bonked on the
head once A-Rod and his new Texas teammates begin batting
practice.

"I don't know if he'll be jumping into the water to get too many
of his home run balls," said Matt LaBranche, overseeing the
Rangers' operations in the Gulf Coast city of Port Charlotte,
Fla.

Baseball will be full of interesting sights all over Florida and
Arizona when camps open.

Mike Mussina wearing the pinstripes of the three-time World
Series champion New York Yankees. Manny Ramirez batting for the
Boston Red Sox and David Wells pitching for the Chicago White
Sox.

John Smoltz recovering from elbow surgery. Tim Raines returning
from retirement and Deion Sanders expected back from the NFL.

Broadcasters Buck Martinez and Bob Brenly out of the booth and
into the dugouts. There are a half-dozen new managers, and
they're each ready to shout about those high strikes that umpires
intend to call this season.

It all starts Tuesday when pitchers and catchers report to the
Cincinnati Reds' camp at Sarasota, Fla.
