*** It's official: Oklahoma vs. North Carolina on Aug. 25

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - It's official: national champion Oklahoma
will play North Carolina on Aug. 25 in the Hispanic Fund Football
Classic. The schools issued news releases Saturday, nearly two
days after the matchup had been made, and both coaches said they
were happy to have an extra game to the schedule. For Oklahoma's
Bob Stoops, it means a chance at possibly playing 14 games next
season after going 13-0 in 2000 and winning the national title.
"We're excited to play in a preseason game," Stoops said.
"Certainly North Carolina has a very good tradition in football.
We're anxious to get out there and play and it will be fun to
play an extra game." The game, to be televised by ESPN at 7:45
p.m. ET, will serve as John Bunting's coaching debut at North
Carolina. The Tar Heels were 6-5 last season and return seven
starters on offense and eight on defense. The Sooners should be
heavily favored.

*** Alabama hires two assistants

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama coach Dennis Franchione completed
his staff Saturday, hiring Ron Case to coach safeties and Lee
Fobbs as running backs coach. Case, 62, replaces Mark Parks, who
had been on a leave of absence after he was named in a civil
rights complaint by two former Texas Christian players. Case had
coached under new defensive coordinator Carl Torbush at North
Carolina and is a former Mississippi assistant and Carson-Newman
head coach. Fobbs, 50, comes to Alabama from Baylor. He will take
over for Ken Rucker, who took a job earlier in the week at Texas
A&M. Franchione, who accepted the Alabama job on Dec. 1, also
said that he has finalized his contract. It still has to be
approved by the board of trustees and president Andrew Sorensen.
Franchione didn't disclose any details of the contract, but it is
expected to worth about $1.1 million annually over seven years.
