Mendoza agrees to $1.6 million contract with Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) - Before trying to sign Derek Jeter to a long-term
contract, the Yankees settled one of their potential arbitration
cases, agreeing to a $1.6 million, one-year contract on Saturday
with reliever Ramiro Mendoza. Mendoza pitched in just 14 games
last season because of arm problems. He was 7-4 with a 4.25 ERA
in nine starts and five relief appearances, pitching in just one
major league game after June. Bothered by a weak right shoulder,
he missed 28 games between June 25 and July 27, then went back on
the DL three days later. The 28-year-old pitcher tried to come
back but still felt pain and had arthroscopic surgery Sept. 21 to
repair a tissue tear. Mendoza, who gets a raise of $200,000, also
gets the chance to earn more in performance bonuses. He becomes
the 15th player on the Yankees roster to make $1 million, and his
signing raises the payroll to $82.7 million for 18 players.
